The nextest skill covers cargo-nextest, the
Rust test runner that executes each test in its own process. It is the runner
the Rust gates use, and the skill documents what that model changes: process
isolation, per-test parallelism, and the failures that only appear once tests
stop sharing one process.
Use it when a Rust test run needs more than cargo test offers — sharding a
suite across CI runners, archiving a build and running it elsewhere, retrying
flaky tests, capping hung tests with timeouts, serializing tests that contend
for a database through test groups, or assigning port numbers to tests from
their slot number. It also covers the integrations that hang off the runner:
Miri, cargo llvm-cov, cargo-mutants, and Criterion benchmarks.
The skill targets cargo-nextest 0.9.143, and its commands were checked
against that release. The get-rust-tooling bootstrap currently installs
0.9.133 with cargo binstall at the pinned CARGO_NEXTEST_VERSION, so
features the skill marks with a version — the cargo nextest help topics, the
config JSON schemas, junit.report-skipped, and the relaxed filterset parsing
— are newer than what an unmodified bootstrap provides. Raise that variable to
0.9.143 to use them.
It ships from this repository, so install-skills delivers it with the other
skills and no separate skill checkout is needed. See the
migration guide if an earlier deployment installed
the skill from its own repository.
